Key Strategies

  1. Place the largest ship first

The biggest ship (4 or 5 cells) is the hardest to fit. Determine all possible positions for it first — this dramatically narrows the placement space for all other ships.

  2. Ships cannot touch

No two ships may occupy adjacent cells, including diagonally. After placing any ship, mark the surrounding cells as empty water.

  3. Use row/column hit counts

Each row and column clue shows how many cells of ships it contains. Rows with a clue of 0 are all water. Rows whose clue equals their length are entirely ships.

  4. Match partial clues

When a cell is revealed as a ship and you know its neighbors are water (from 0-clue rows/columns), you can determine the ship's orientation and length.

Put It Into Practice

The best way to improve is to play regularly. Start with an easy puzzle and apply these techniques one at a time.
