About Chess Ranger

Chess Ranger is the non-attacking complement to Chess Melee. Given a set of chess pieces including some pre-placed on the board, you must place the remaining pieces so that no piece attacks any other. This is a generalization of the classic N-Queens problem to a mixed set of piece types.

The N-Queens problem — placing N queens on an N×N board so none attacks another — is a celebrated combinatorics challenge. Chess Ranger extends this to all piece types, each with different attack patterns. Bishops block diagonals, rooks block files and ranks, and knights attack specific L-shaped squares independently of other pieces.

Chess Ranger rewards systematic thinking: map out which squares are “safe” given the pre-placed pieces, then fit the remaining pieces into the safe zones without creating new conflicts. Each new placement reduces the safe zone further, making later placements more constrained.

Queens restrict the most squares per piece. Identify all squares that pre-placed queens attack and eliminate them from consideration immediately. Then place remaining queens before bishops and rooks, since queens combine both their attack patterns.
