-
Every piece must be attacked
The goal is a position where every piece attacks at least one other piece on the board. No piece can be completely isolated from all attacks.
-
Use long-range pieces as anchors
Queens, rooks, and bishops attack along entire lines. Place them so they cover multiple other pieces at once, reducing the number of moves needed.
-
Knights are trickiest to connect
Knights jump in an L-shape and can be hard to bring into mutual attack. Place knights early and build the rest of the position around them.
-
Think globally, not piece by piece
Moving one piece can break an existing mutual attack while creating a new one. Evaluate the entire board after each move.
Put It Into Practice
The best way to improve is to play regularly. Start with an easy puzzle and apply these techniques one at a time.
