Key Strategies

  1. Trace inequality chains

Inequality signs form chains: if A < B < C, then A can't be 3 or higher (in a 4×4 grid), and C can't be 1 or 2. Trace these chains to find minimum and maximum values.

  2. Use Latin-square rules

Every row and column must contain each digit exactly once — the same rule as Sudoku rows. Use elimination just as you would in Sudoku.

  3. Pinpoint extremes first

The cell that is larger than all its neighbors in a chain cannot be the minimum digit. The cell smaller than all others cannot be the maximum. This narrows candidates quickly.

  4. Propagate constraints

After placing a digit, recheck every inequality involving that cell's row and column. New placements often force immediate follow-on deductions through the chains.

Put It Into Practice

The best way to improve is to play regularly. Start with an easy puzzle and apply these techniques one at a time.
