See It in Action
Fill cells to match the number clues — consecutive filled cells in each row and column
How to Play
- Read the clues — each number is a block of consecutive filled cells in that row or column
- Start with rows or columns that have the largest numbers relative to their length — they have the fewest valid positions
- Use the overlap technique: if a block could span positions 3–7 or 5–9, cells 5–7 are definitely filled
- Cross off cells that are definitely empty, then repeat until every cell is determined
Pro Tips
Mark cells you are certain are empty with an X — it prevents second-guessing and speeds up solving
Rows and columns interact: a cell filled by a row clue counts toward the column clue too — always check both directions
If a number equals the entire row length, the whole row is filled — an easy win to start from
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a nonogram?
A nonogram (also called Picross or Hanjie) is a logic puzzle where you fill cells in a grid according to number clues given for each row and column. The numbers tell you how many consecutive filled cells appear in that line.
How do you solve a nonogram?
Start with rows or columns that have large numbers relative to the grid size — these have fewer possible positions and are easiest to determine. Use the overlap technique: if a block must appear somewhere in a range, the overlapping cells are definitely filled.
Are nonograms the same as Picross?
Yes — nonograms, Picross, Hanjie, and Griddlers are all names for the same style of logic puzzle. Picross is Nintendo's brand name for their version.
