-
Connect island cells
Each numbered white island must contain exactly that many connected white cells. All other cells are black "sea." Islands of different numbers cannot connect.
-
No 2×2 black squares
The black sea may never form a 2×2 block. Use this rule to force some sea cells to remain white (part of an island), or to eliminate candidate island shapes.
-
The sea must be connected
All black sea cells form a single connected group. If placing black cells would cut the sea into two disconnected parts, that placement is wrong.
-
Use unreachable cells
A white cell that cannot be reached by any numbered island (too far or blocked) must be black sea. Identify these early to reduce candidate space.
-
Islands cannot touch
Two islands (belonging to different numbers) may not share an edge. A white cell between two island territories must belong to exactly one of them, which helps determine island shapes.
Put It Into Practice
The best way to improve is to play regularly. Start with an easy puzzle and apply these techniques one at a time.
