Key Strategies

  1. Every capture reduces piece count by one

You must reduce all pieces to exactly one. Plan a capture sequence that leaves a path to the last piece — don't leave orphaned pieces that nothing can reach.

  2. Work backward from the last piece

Imagine which piece will be the survivor. Can everything else reach it (directly or through captures)? If not, pick a different last piece.

  3. Each piece can only capture what it attacks

A rook captures along files and ranks; a bishop along diagonals. Before attempting a sequence, check that each piece has a legal capture available at each step.

  4. Preserve mobility

Avoid captures that move your remaining pieces into corners or positions where they can no longer reach other pieces. Always keep at least one valid next move available.

Put It Into Practice

The best way to improve is to play regularly. Start with an easy puzzle and apply these techniques one at a time.
