-
Understand the shading rule
Shaded cells must all connect into a single orthogonally-connected group. A number clue shows the lengths of consecutive shaded segments in the 8 surrounding cells, in any order.
-
No 2×2 shaded squares
Shaded cells cannot form a 2×2 block anywhere in the grid. Use this to eliminate placements near already-shaded areas.
-
Use the ? clue
A ? clue means some positive number of shaded cells surround it, but the exact count is unknown. Use neighboring clue cells to deduce it.
-
Consecutive clue groups force the gap
If a clue shows two separate groups (e.g., [2,3]), there must be at least one unshaded gap between them in the 8 surrounding cells. This limits valid configurations significantly.
Put It Into Practice
The best way to improve is to play regularly. Start with an easy puzzle and apply these techniques one at a time.
